The Book of Joshua

World English Bible · with a gazetteer of place names

The Book of Joshua is, among other things, a work of geography. Its narrative moves through named places — fords, ruins, valleys, hill-country towns — and its second half is a registry of land allotted by tribe, naming sites that often appear nowhere else in scripture. Many of these places are settled identifications; many are conjectural; some are unknown.

This edition pairs the text of the World English Bible (public domain) with a map of the places named in each chapter. Identifications follow the Anchor Bible Dictionary, with footnotes recording disputed cases and alternative candidates.

Solid pins denote identified sites; lighter pins denote probable identifications; outlined pins denote conjectural ones. Unidentified places are listed in the chapter footnotes but not pinned.
